Why I Love Tomatoes & My Husband
May 27, 2011
Last night our weather was finally warm enough and dry enough to transplant my herd of tomato plants into the garden... Glory, glory, hallelujah! It was about time. The tomatoes were getting disgruntled. They needed more than their little pots could give them. Today they are happily nestled in their protective casings (old buckets and concrete tile) in the rich, fertile, black garden soil.
I was a little worried they would even survive. They were looking a little ragged from being outside in the somewhat chilly and windy weather. But when I went out to check them this morning, all but one seemed to be looking quite chipper and happy.
I'm actually still a little worried they'll continue to survive. I'm not sure why. I'm realizing my attitude from last year's gardening is starting to repeat itself... I'm a bit mistrustful that these seeds are simply going to burst forth from the soil in the miraculous fashion in which they do. Again, I'm not sure why, especially after last year's garden splendor.

Garden 2010. The proof is in the pudding. I gotta get over my doubting Thomasina-ness.
So, like I was saying, last night we finally got the tomato plants transplanted into the garden. And in that experience, I was reminded of one of the reasons why I love my husband. Just as he put away all my tomato buckets for me last fall, this spring he brought them all out again. He also cut holes in a couple new ones, and went out in search of ten concrete tiles for me to put around them as well, as my tomato plans (fifteen different varieties) are a bit more ambitious than last year. He's always more than gracious about doing the heavy lifting and shuttling around of this, that, and the other thing.
I love him for this.
I love him for that.
And I love him for the other thing.

I also love tomatoes.
Hence the fifteen different varieties.
If they don't all die (sorry, I'm still in 'doubting Thomasina' mode) it's going to be a beautifully colorful harvest!
And speaking of beautifully colorful tomatoes, I wanted to tell you about the company where I order my rainbow cherry tomato seed from... They're called 'Botanical Interests'. When we lived in Colorado, I saw their seed packets here and there (they're based out of Colorado), but here in MN I don't ever see them. However, they have a great website, where you can order them online. I have been very happy with their seeds, but I'm even more in love with their seed packets! They're lovely little works of art...
I think their website single-handedly got me through the winter. If you're relaxing this Memorial Day weekend, snuggle up to your computer and check them out.
Have a great weekend, all!

Gardening,
Mr. Blue Eyes

Those are so colorful. Don't be Thomasina..............it's gonna be awesome.
If you get even a fraction of the volume that you harvested last year, you will still be doing great!
