Up At and Up To
September 26, 2009
In an attempt to carve out a slice of the day for myself – a time for Bible study, devotion, silence and solitude – I have resolved to start getting up earlier in the morning, before my family rises. Throughout any regular day, finding time just for me is almost impossible. Sure, I find time to write here and there, but it is almost always a few sentences written between tending to the dishes or laundry, stopping Miss Peaches from climbing onto the coffee table or reminding Little Blue Eyes to share. Even though Mr. Blue Eyes is great about taking the kids off my hands when he’s home, I have to admit that I don’t really enjoy squeezing in ‘me time’ randomly. Not that I don’t appreciate a surprise moment for myself from time to time, but I needed something more… A promise to myself, to take time for myself and the Lord, every day.

As I sit here and write in the early light of day and glance out the window at the horses still asleep in the dewy grass, sipping my cinnamon spiced coffee, I have to tell you: This is quickly becoming one of my favorite times of day. I pray that I will be able to continue, especially when the chill of winter makes it all the more appealing to stay snuggled up in my warm bed. Mr. Blue Eyes is a good snuggler too… It could be a challenge.
Not only I am I discovering one of my favorite times of day, but also enjoying my favorite time of year. Harvest is beginning here in farm country. Mr. Blue Eyes now works for a seed corn company – they grow corn for the sole purpose of replanting the kernels as seeds, I think... I'm really no expert on the subject – and they have begun to pick the corn. Because it is seed corn, the process is a little bit more ‘old school’ and hands-on than more modern farming practices because they have to handle the corn carefully. It is interesting to learn how the whole process works, although I can’t say I have a handle on all of it just yet. The other farmers are on the move as well, preparing machinery and some even beginning to harvest the three primary crops in our area, regular corn, soy beans and sugar beets.
Since we have moved into our new home, we have unpacked and decorated to the point where we feel settled. There are projects that we would like to work on sometime down the line – more painting, organizing the garage, putting up fence – but for now we’re giving it a rest. It has been a year of so many big changes, it feels good to resume a more normal pace. I’ve been working slowly but surely at setting up our home and filling out the paperwork to become a home day care. I even have a couple of potential customers, two babies who have not even been born yet.
I think that Little Blue Eyes and Miss Peaches now feel that our new residence is their home. They each have their own room and the house is scattered with all of their toys and books. But more than that, this is the place where our family once again lives, rising and playing and eating and sleeping.
Little Blue Eyes just woke up and came wandering out to tell me that, “The light is on,” as he pointed out the window at the first glimpses of the sunrise. Guess it’s time to get on with my day…

Good morning! I am so glad you all are settled in now. Your sunrise photos are so beautiful and calming...just gorgeous. Happy that you got some "me" time....that is so important...nurture you some. I have not carved out any time to get in the Bible. I have a small flip calendar that contains Bible verses and sits on a shelf in our bathroom. I read the verse each morning and use that as my daily thought to start my day. Have a wonderful day, Laura!
Very thought provoking. Thank you. My life is so different now in comparison to where I was when I had 5 little ones to care for. I remember thinking that there weren't enough hours in a day.
You are a wise woman.
I have recently bought me a nice DSLR and I'm taking a photography class and going to join a photography club. Your photos give me something to strive for!
Thank you.

Tauna - That is so great! I haven't been taking nearly enough time for photography lately, but I still love it and hope to make more time for it. Hope you enjoy your camera!
