Thirty-One Days of Thankful: The Suspense
December 13, 2011
You might think, in our rural, laid-back lifestyle, that there wouldn't be much suspense beyond what we get from watching Gold Rush on Friday nights.
And rescuing dogs out of dredge ditches.
But you'd be wrong.
Because, when you have a five-year-old and a three-year-old who are quite good conversationalists and just becoming a little bit savvy about what goes on in the world, you never know what is going to pop out of their mouth.
Here are a couple of examples from the last few days...
Little Blue Eyes (at 7:30 a.m.): Mom, are we all out of squash now?
(Evidently his dislike for squash, which we haven't eaten in over a week, prompted him to wonder and hope, at 7:30 a.m., that perhaps it was now all gone and out of our lives for good.)
...............................
Little Blue Eyes (out of nowhere): Mom, do you want to talk about things I've never done before?
Me (hesitantly, because if I oblige, we could be talking for a long time): Sure.
...............................
Miss Peaches (after watching a country music video that depicted a woman in jail): Mom, why is that lady in jail?
Me: I don't know.
(I really didn't know. And it was fairly early on a Saturday morning and I wasn't awake enough to make anything up.)
Miss Peaches: Mom, why is she in jail?
Me: I don't know.
Miss Peaches: Mom, why is that lady in jail?
Me (leaning in for effect): I. Don't. Know.
The conversation pauses for a few seconds, then...
Miss Peaches (quietly and totally serious): Is it because she went potty outside in town?
Me (also quietly and totally serious): Yes, I think it might be.
(We may have told our kids that you get arrested for going potty outside when you're in town, which is technically true. A couple summers ago they were getting really comfortable with going potty outside here on the farm, which was fine and dandy (and handy), but we needed to establish why it wasn't okay to do this in town. The idea stuck.)
The suspense... I'm thankful for the way it keeps things so wonderfully interesting.

POST SCRIPT: After I wrote this post, another piece of evidence... Miss Peaches came out wearing this...
...for the day. She then informed me: "I'm going to sthchool today. When am I going to take another dance class? I have identified that I am going to take another dance class."
I rest my case.
Our house is like a box of chocolates... You never know what yer gonna git.
The Kids,
