The Storm - Part 3
July 13, 2011 For today I'm just going to try to let some pictures tell the story. I tend to get a little long-winded; pictures are more concise. Yet sometimes more informative. Without being too long-winded. Like me.
First off... My nephew...
He was one of the first ones to show up, and was very helpful the next day during clean-up. He's cute. Isn't he cute? I think he's cute. Don't tell him I said that.
The death of a tree.
I know, in perspective, that I am mostly just happy that we, and everyone we know, were safe and sound following this storm. But in all honesty, I'm also really sad about losing so many trees. They were beautiful living things, and they just can't be replaced.
Trees, draped over our house.
I'm about to say something kind of crazy.
I know you'll agree that it's crazy.
You might even agree to the extent that you say, out loud, to yourself, as you're reading this, "She's crazy."
And that's okay.
But I have to say it...
Every time I look at pictures like this, where trees are draped over our house, I can't help but think that they threw themselves on top of the house and gave their lives to protect us from other things that were flying by.
Crazy?!?!?
Probably. But for some reason that vision keeps running through my head, and I just had to tell someone. I will never admit this, out loud, to another living soul. Because it sounds so crazy. But there you have it.
Tree debris.
I'm a poet and didn't know it.
Another lipgloss application pic, just in case you didn't get enough of it yesterday.
I tucked these things here, tucked in this little corner, just before the storm hit, so that they wouldn't blow away. They didn't. This was just one tiny example of how everything was so 'hit and miss'... On spot would have destruction, another was left untouched. We saw this countless times in a twenty mile radius around our farm in the following days.
Horse. Power lines.
Horse. Trying to figure out how to cross over power lines.
Horse. After crossing power lines. Taunting my sister with his massive presence. Me: Taking the photo and laughing.
Horse. Surveying the damage to his former hang-out area, for the first time. I actually saw his eyes widen. It wasn't fear. Just... Surprise.
Horse, just after trying to take a drink out of the little pot at his feet. I guess we were all a little confused at that point.
Splattered with mud. They were each splattered with mud on one side. Interestingly, not the same side. Makes you wonder.

Damage, damage, damage.
Round bale that ended up out in the field; power lines in the foreground.
Trees blocking the road to my sister-in-law's house.
Grain bin across the road.
Grain bins, old barns and machine sheds... Those seem to be the three things that were damaged/destroyed the most.
The sky at sunset, about four hours after the storm. Just as beautiful as any other evening.
Up next... The clean-up!
