Snow and Soup (Take 2)
January 11, 2011
This is our happy little Welcome snow man. I remember the day I put him here in his little barrel, thinking how we were ready to welcome winter into our lives. He was much more welcoming, and visible, before he became engulfed in snow. Now he's a barely noticeable mound of white. Winter is no respecter of snow men.
We're in the middle of a little bout of what the radio man called 'pretty snow', the kind that just falls and falls, with no wind to whip it about. The radio man is right. It is very pretty, and it has left a coating of softly sloping snow on top of everything.
We're also in the middle of a little bout of sickness. Last night I pieced together another pot of soup, and you can bet your bottom I didn't set it outside to cool down. It was a little different soup than the creamy potato and ham soup I'd made last week. This soup was all about health.
We've been sicklings in our household for about the last two weeks now, ravaged by colds and stomach flu.
Okay. Maybe ravaged is too strong a word.
But we have been enduring some long-lived sickness, along with pretty much everyone we know. So, last night, I stirred up a pot of everything healthy I could find in the house... Chicken, rice, carrots, garlic, onion, spinach, more garlic, turmeric and saffron.
As the kids and I sat and slurped up the soup (Mr. Blue Eyes skipped supper as he's currently the one with the stomach flu affliction) I chanted the little tune, "Get well, get well soon, we want you to get well," in my mind, channeling Elaine Benice from Seinfeld as I did so.
And thus has been the way of things around our household lately. Thankfully I have been able to at least keep up with cooking and a little cleaning to get by, and somehow even found a little time to continue on my organization spree. But beyond that, we're in survival mode, and resting mode. I have a bad feeling it may be a little difficult to wean my kids off of marathon television viewing once they feel better, but for now it keeps them content and resting, so I'm thankful for it.
The dogs and horses are thankful that this gentle snow has brought with it much more temperate temperatures... A whopping 15 degrees! The horses are happily napping, while the dogs are running around like wild men. It. Cracks. Me. Up.
I'm just glad someone is having a good time around here. In the meantime, I'm going to switch the sign on our Welcome snow man to say... Go away, winter. And take your stinkin' germs with you.

I think I'd like a sign like that too! Hope everyone's on the mend!
I would like winter to go aways too... I have had enough, and right now I am very jealous of your 'work-from-home-and-not-having-to-drive' profession as this driving on crappy roads EVERY SINGLE DAY is getting quite annoying. Can we switch for awhile?(Well, maybe when the germs go away!). Hope your household is feeling better soon.
I hear ya! Sickness is going around. Sore throats, runny noses and coughing makes for restless nights, and crabby people. When you get your sign send one my way, thanks!
