Open Yer Yap

A couple of weeks go, Miss Peaches gobbled up just about anything we put in her path. She was totally on board with her new world of flavors and textures, and anything would go.

Lately, her palate has become a bit more... Discerning. Her demeanor, in general, has become a bit more discerning, in fact. She's starting to have more of an opinion on what she does and doesn't want.

Isn't it sad when they realize that they have their own minds to make up? I liked the phase where I called all the shots. It's a fleeting time in baby-hood, but wonderful, that time where they think every idea that you have is A-OK.

On the other hand, it's pretty amazing to see the little wheels turning in their head and see them come into their own personality.

Anyhow, her growing autonomy is manifesting itself at meal time. No longer are the days when she devoured every spoonful I put in her mouth. Now she regards it visually, tastes it, then ponders if it is up to her standards, and if so, how quickly she is willing to ingest it.

This requires more effort from me. There's a lot more coercing, air-plane and choo-choo train noises, smiling and talking in a really high and pleasant voice. She's making me work for it.

"Are you sure I should be eating this? I may have to think it over a bit."

"I'm not just givin' the milk away for free here. What tricks have you got to show me? I'm still upset that you make me wear my brother's hand-me-down 'thank God for little boys' bibs. This had better be good."

Insert airplane and choo-choo train noises here.

"Eh, that was pretty weak. I'm going to need something more. How about making fart sounds with your tongue?"

"Hee, hee. Now we're talking. But I'm still a little bit on the fence. You have, afterall, neglected my needs by leaving me lop-sided, in terms of my sock arrangement, that is..."

"I feel so unkept. Maybe I'll just chew on my sleeve instead."

Insert airplane noises, choo-choo train noises, fart noises and baby talk here.

"Hee, hee! Yep, that's funny. I don't care who ya' are. And now for your reward, mommy..."

Triumph! She takes a bite. Then we start the whole process all over again.

Meanwhile, under the table...

... in case you've ever wondered what it looks like from the dog's point of view.

"I think I'll just take a nap here until some food falls."

I should really conact the 'Life is Good' people to see if they need a mascot.
