Mildly Obsessed
May 17, 2010
If you don't see me around here as often as usual, it's because I'm currently wandering through my day-to-day life while nursing several mild obsessions. Poor Mr. Blue Eyes... I've literally kept him up nights discussing these things...
1) Vegetable gardening... Planting. Sprouting. Weeding. Tilling. Cultivating.
(Those last two are not the same thing, by the way, as I have recently learned. Speaking of cultivating, I also just purchased this, and I am in love with it. I looks like some sort of midieval torture device, but it's not. And I love it.)
2) Safe and natural dandelion control. I'm not so much obsessed with this as plagued by it, but it's necessary.
3) Flower planting and the prospect of visiting the chiropractor. Believe me, the two are quite closely related. At least that is what my lower back is telling me.
4) Bird feeding. I just spent the better part of a half hour reading about oriole feeders online. Because I saw two of them flying around the yard this morning. And now I must feed them. I must. I'm almost certain they cannot survive unless I provide them some nectar and jelly and oranges.
All of this business is literally like a spring fever, I tell you! The sun comes out and I completely lose my mind. Laundry, cooking, and all other necessary household tasks (even eating!) fall to the wayside... People, there are petunias to plant! Nothing else matters.
Luckily my achin' back and my achin' ball joint bring me back to my senses and force me to take a necessary step back, look around my neglected home, and once again regain some order.
The good news is that I think (knock on wood) that I have exhausted myself of planting flowers. Now I will be content to sit back and nurse them to blossoming splendor. The other good news is that, after a few purchases -- oriole feeder, thistle feeder and one more hummingbird feeder -- I think I will have put my bird feeding obsession to rest as well, other than to refill and birdwatch with glee.
The dandelions... Well, that will be an ongoing battle.
And then there's the vegetable garden. I'm pretty sure not only will I want to remain obsessed with it for the rest of the summer; I'll be required to. What with weeding, watering, harvesting, processing and all. But I'm happy to do it. (I say that now.) The whole idea of growing food for our family is awesome.
To me, that is.
Perhaps you don't share my obsession.
What about you? What's got you all a flutter these days?

I'm afraid I too suffer from your disorder. I love the yard and garden and planing and weeding and sowing and harvesting and canning and that's about enuff "ands"!
I do get a little tired of the strangler veggies that refuse to ripen so I can be done with the canning thing though.
I need to get some bird feeders cause I do love the little critters.
You must be taking before and after pictures aren't you?
You go girl - can't wait to see it all in bloom!
With all the busyness here this here I haven't even started a garden. I think I'm going to concentrate on containers this year and expand next year. Good luck with the dandelions. Please share if you find a secret cure.

I can't wait to see your flowers blossoming. I love to walk through gardens and ooh and ahh over each flower. I planted patio pots this year. It's about the only thing I can do with our being on the go all of the time. Thankfully the kind, former homeowners planted hardy perennials that require little care, and bloom all summer. Fertilizing and weeding is about as far as I get with them. I agree, pictures of the garden process would be fun to see! :)
I'm doing a vegetable garden for the second time this year. I LOVE it! I never thought I would be so consumed with thinking about, checking on, and working in my garden. The little plants are kind of like my babies.
Flowers are a different story. I almost always kill them somehow. Don't know why. I love to look at other people's flowers, but I can't seem to take care of my own just yet. :)
Oh I've got lots of obsessions of my own no worries there. ;) However, when it comes to gardening my husband takes the cake so I leave that to him. I did put some flowers in this year we'll see how that goes. I usually just stick to iris as haven't managed to kill them yet. LOL
Me again - make sure that you pop over to my blog today - it's the last day to go in the draw for my give-away!
You sound like a double of me, every year, every spring. I sometimes feel like I am going crazy - glad to know there are other's out there.
