Livin' La Vida Loca
July 25, 2011
So much has happened since the beginning of July.
I don't know where to start.
I don't know where to end.
I'm stuck in the middle with you.
Because I couldn't possibly catch up on individual blog posts about all of it, let's just... Let's just... Recap.
Agreed?
Agreed.
So, since the beginning of July, we have...
1. Been hit by a tornado...
If you haven't already, you can read about it... Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
I had intended to write a few blog posts about the post-storm clean-up as well, but at this point it's questionable as to whether or not that is actually going to happen, so in case those posts never do get written, let me just give you a blanket statement to cover the jist of things...
We cleaned up and are still cleaning up the aftermath. The end.
2. We celebrated Independence Day...
This was basically throwing together a bunch of food amidst the storm clean-up process. It was simple and delicious... I made bbq chicken, my mother-in-law brought some potato salad, and my sister put together these flag cakes.
3. We had another nasty storm blow through. It helped us out (not really) by knocking down one of the remaining walls of our machine shed.
4. My mom had knee surgery, and ended up having complications afterward... She was extremely exhausted and had no appetite. At first we thought it could be due to her heart having atrial fibrilation. However, this seemed to correct itself, yet she continued to not feel well. Last Wednesday she called me from the rehab center she is in, and I could tell something was wrong. She said she had almost passed out, and her blood pressure was low. Two of my sisters headed up there right away, and found her not in a good state. The took her to Urgent Care, where she almost passed out. She was sent to the ER (during this time, as my sisters were driving to the ER, they were rear-ended by an out-of-control driver) where they found her hemoglobin was very low (meaning she was low on blood... not good!). They suspected some sort of gastrointestinal internal bleeding. The following morning they performed an endoscopy and found a bleeding ulcer in her stomach and fixed it. Since then she has slowly been doing better, praise God.
5. Miss Peaches celebrated her 3rd birthday...
6. The kids participated in a tractor pull...
Little Blue Eyes put his nose to the grindstone and peddled until his little legs just couldn't peddle no more... 11'11". Miss Peaches told the tractor pull guy her life's story as she slowly peddled along.
This is completely as I expected it to go.
7. We endured a ridiculously brutal heat wave...
It left you drenched with sweat the moment you stepped out the door. I feared for the life of the dogs. And the horses. And the goats.
That's right. I said goats.
8. In the midst of all this craziness, we acquired a couple of goats...
This may be the most stupid idea I've ever had.
And that's sayin' something.
However, in all fairness, I did make the decision and the commitment to acquire the goats back in June, before the chaos that is the month of July ensued.
The kids and I went to see a lady about some goats back in early June. We decided to take them (two does), but needed a couple weeks to get their pen ready. She said it was no problem to keep them a little longer. During that time, unbeknownst to anyone, one of them gave birth to a baby. They wanted to keep the baby, so they asked if they could keep the goats a little longer until the baby could be weaned. We decided we would get them the beginning of July.
Then points 1 thru 7, above, occurred, and here we were, committed to embarking on the new adventure of goat ownership.
More on that one tomorrow...
Now I think I shall go throw myself on a fainting couch and drape my arm across my forehead for awhile.
It just feels like the right thing to do.

Goats,
