He's So Minnesota

I don't even like labs.

Well, that's not true. Let me rephrase that... I'm not a lab 'person'.

In fact, I do like labs. Several of my siblings and other family have labs. By brother and nephew are into doing hunting dog trials with their labs. Off the top of my head, I can think of over ten labs currently owned by close family. I've had friends and neighbors who have labs. I think labs are perfectly nice dogs. Got nothin' against them.

But they were never the dog that I would have gone out and chosen. Especially a black lab. It's likely that I would have lived my entire life without ever searching out a black lab to own.

Again, nothin' against them. Just wouldn't have picked one.

And by the way, do you know that solid black dogs are the least likely to be picked at animal shelters? This makes me a little bit ashamed of my 'non black lab' personhood.

But I'm just being honest.

I'm not a lab 'person'.

So it makes it all the more ironic that I would now become the proud owner of a black lab, and be totally head-over-heels in love with him. And, dare I say it, he... with me.

Henry doesn't know I'm not a lab 'person'. Please don't ever tell him. I couldn't bear for anything to ever taint our love.

The thing is, labs are pretty much ubiquitous in Minnesota. People are into labs here, big time. To some people, it's like no other breed of dog exists. And it makes sense, really... Labs are known for being water-loving dogs, and Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes. Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, it's lab, lab, lab lab lab.

Lab, lab, lab.

Lab lab.

Lab.

Lab.

Lab.

It's kind of the same way I felt about Facebook. Everyone was doing it, but I didn't get it. Finally I joined up and now I get it.

And so it is with labs.

I get it.

And even though I wouldn't have gone out and picked one, I am very thankful that one picked me.

He is gorgeous! And you are right about Labs being so Minnesotan...and Golden Retrievers too. We have a Golden. Great family dogs and loyal beyond imagination - just like Labs! I'm glad you found each other. :-)
