Getting to Know You
November 8, 2010 If you could click on this link and listen to the song as you read this post, it would be helpful.
Because that is the song that runs through my head every time I look at this photo...
I find observing animal interaction highly fascinating and entertaining.
Which is good, because it seems that I spend large portions of my day hanging around with them.
They trot to and fro outside my window.
They swish their tails and nibble on grass in the sunshine. (The horses.)
They steal my gourds and chew them into something unrecognizeable. (The dogs.) (Pretty much just Henry.)
They look pretty and remind me that it is a gift to be simple and free.
But my favorite thing about watching them in their day-to-day life is their interactions with one another.
Sometimes they are quiet and knowing. At rest in their dynamic with one another.
Other times they are a flurry of activity, for which my shutter speed and I are ill prepared.
I am in love with them all.
But at the moment, this...
...is the face that launched a thousand ships.
It is a joy to have welcomed Henry into our fold.
(Despite the bittersweet loss of another, and then another.)
Yesterday I sat down on the ground and beckoned him over. And over he came. We sat, head to head, eyes closed, as I scratched and rubbed. Then he stretched out his head and rested it on my shoulder.
It is right and good to know the love of a dog.

Lovely. I watched one of our chickens bravely go over and check out what our cat was eating today - love how there is no fear or intimidation (although I was wondering what would happen if the chook tried to take the food!)
Oh, and I've made the big move to my own domain! Hope you'll pop in for a visit ;-)
That is a beautiful dog! I love his face.
