Breaking Ground - Part 2

So, the plowing the other night was kind of a beautiful thing. There was the family togetherness, the delightfully old yet reliable Super M, the comradery with mother earth. It was lovely.

However, the plowing left things in the soon-to-be-garden a bit... Chunky. There was work left to do. At our disposal, we had a digger (which has c-shaped tines that dig into the ground as you drag it along behind the tractor), which my father-in-law ran over the patch of dirt the other day, but this still left things quite lacking. We needed some fine tillage.

And we didn't have a fine tilling machine. We had a walk-behind tiller, but there was no way it was ever going to make it through the chunks that were staring us down. This was making me a bit agitated. And I don't like to be agitated.

Enter Ladybird's & Uncle Buck's New Holland tractor with tiller attachment...

Hello there, friend. I dig you. I mean... You... Dig up my garden soil. But I... I dig you.

Within a span of about an hour, our chunky patch of coarsely overturned soil was a sight to behold.

Okay, so... Tilled up garden soil doesn't exactly photograph well. This photo is a little bit drab. But I assure you... I ASSURE you... It puts my soul and my nerve endings at ease. And you can see, right? No chunks?

No chunks.

Ahhhhh....

Exhale.

Sigh happily.

So, here I sit... We had several blissful hours outside this evening. I just made and ate a fantastic homemade pizza, followed by homemade brownies. I've got a cold Leinenkugel's (a Wisconsin beer, in case you aren't familiar) chilling beside me. The hubby is just finishing putting the kids down to bed, and the credits are rolling for Charlotte's Web on the tube. And my garden is tilled, just awaiting the seeds that will grow (hopefully) into a beautiful harvest that will feed my family.

Farmer Gal is happy.

Farmer Gal is thankful.

Farmer Gal is... sleepy.

(One beer usually about does me in.)

I have a feeling the dreams will be sweet ones tonight.

I wish I had your little spot of nature there. My homestead is smack dab in the center of a development and my yard bumps into three other yards and that doesn't leave much gardening room. I tried container gardens last year and some of those were successful, but most were not. I think this year I'm going to stick with tomato plants, basil, and mint. Those were all great last summer and we happily used them for all sorts of good eats.

PS - I like that you were holding the baby in the photo. Your shadows make the whole picture. : )

Your garden is gonna be amazing! I'm going over to the nursery to buy my plants this morning and get them all planted today. I have some empty pots left over from my container gardening last year and I figured I'd re-use this for more plants.

Wow...so jealous of your little garden. This coming from someone who lives on a corner lot in the middle of town. I will have to admire your garden through this blog! (And hopefully in person as well sooner than later!! :-)
